CHAPTER THIRTEEN
EMONI
Spending time with Sierra and her family was refreshing. Reminded me how much I missed her and the kids. She was after all my best friend. If I could ever break free from my mess, maybe I’d move to New Jersey. It was only Jocelyn and me now. She could finally return home or move here with me.
The moment Marco walked into the dining room, I panicked.
Pretending we never met seemed best at the time. Sierra thought I was still engaged. I didn’t want my best friend’s pity. However, telling her the truth was a must, but I needed to wait until the perfect time.
His heated gaze kept me aware, I had to come clean. I wondered if Sierra noticed how hot and bothered; I was in Marco’s presence.
My best friend was his matchmaker. He hated she spilled the beans. I didn’t. Dillon tried playing matchmaker to his friend too. Asking how long I’d been single. Marco was uncomfortable. And I loved every minute.
Dillon found it amusing. Sierra was pissed. She ordered the guys into the kitchen. Marco caged me in at the table, whispering in my ear. He warned me again how ruthless he was. It was like the more he warned the more I desired him.
Slipping off my stilettos, I strolled into the kitchen. They were in a deep conversation. The burgundy blazer and black slacks complemented Marco’s sexy muscled frame. Fuck, if I could coax him into touching my pussy, I was sure I’d come in an instant.
Emoni focus. Everything happened in a blink of an eye. My best friend was married to the mob. How the fuck did that happen?
I glanced at Dillon after learning he was a mob boss. Jeff/Dillon a mob boss. I kept repeating it in my head because I only ever known him as the serious, cute boyfriend to my college roommate, Lindsay. Now the husband to my best friend. I blinked a few times, trying to see him through new lenses. Nope couldn’t see it.
Marco joked about killing me and Dillon laughed. The evil glint in his eye sent a shiver up my spine. Would Dillon kill me?
No, I think in a slick way he informed me I walked into a tumultuous situation. Everyone knew the only way you left the mob was through death. Fuck, was that what happened years ago? Dillon faked his death to leave the mob. Then they pulled him right back in. Manage facial expressions, Emoni.
After admitting I met Marco at Sierra’s charity, I felt like a weight had been lifted. We were all on the same page. Dinner was delicious.
Marco wanted what our friends had. I did too.
He didn’t want to appear vulnerable. It was obvious he’d never been in love before. Until now. We’ve been inseparable since he arrived in Portland a second time.
How could we go our separate ways now?
Marco stepped away. I heard the water running in the powder room off the living room. He allowed me in and again; I probed.
